Images from 1917 Good Housekeeping

I have a bound edition of Good Housekeeping with January to July issues from 1917. I bought it because each issue features a layout of Rose O'Neill Kewpies. And also for the other great images of fashions and housewares of the day. Here are a few of the pretty images from the edition.
Oh look, there's me working in my garden . . . .

If only I was that cute in my garden. Would I looooooooove to find overalls from 1917.
Love the hat, the fur and the fancy little purse in the 2nd image.
Most of the drawings in the magazines are just black outlines. There are a few like the one below, that have pale peach coloring.

The lingerie and boudoir drawings are my favorites.

1917 Good Housekeeping ad for my wardrobe trunk

You might remember my post from last April about the Old wardrobe trunk that I bought .
Recently I was going through a 1917 bound edition of Good Housekeeping and I found this ad for the exact style of trunk. Very cool.

Ad for cigarettes featuring very cool vintage gloves - and they're green!

First the green caught my eye, of course, because you know that I love green. Then the coolness of the gloves caught me. I need these gloves. But I don't smoke. I could put something else in those awesome little snap pockets. A cellphone! But I hardly use mine though, it's rarely turned on. Maybe by the time that I find a pair I'll think of something to put in them.

Olympic 'Fashion' and Curling can be fun

I'm more of a Summer Olympics fan I guess. I like the gymnastics, swimming, diving, volleyball etc. But I have been catching some of the Winter Olympics and realize now that I've been missing some cool stuff. The skiing and snowboarding is scarey, which makes it good to watch. I saw that gal take that huge spill in the skiing. Ouch. I mean she really slammed down that hill. And she got up and competed the following night too.
One difference between the Summer and Winter Olympics  is the 'Fashion' - if you can call it that. Now, there's not much to say about Misty May and Kerri Walsh's 'uniforms' other than how they seem to get smaller with each Olympics. But Winter means the need for more fabric, which results in more interesting gear.
The snowboarding uniform is the most notable "I don't get it". I mean, I do get it, it's supposed to be Trendy, Hipster. OK. Big baggy fake jeans that seem to be fallling off of the boys while they compete. They're not as baggy on the girls, but still odd. Then they also wear these obnoxiously plaid tops. I love plaid, but this plaid is just obnoxious.


These guys almost make Curling look cool and fun. No, not really. Although the pants are cool. The only time Curling has looked fun was when the Beatles played it in Help.

"A Fiendish Thingy"

Lastly was this Czech Figure skater, who was wearing a vintage-like costume. I liked it and he was cute. Of course when you get up close (which you can't in this photo because it is so tiny) you can see that the stripes on the shirt are sequinned. I think it's a law that you must have sequins on your skating costume or else they knock off points.

Relaxing on the beach in Strathmere

Check out the cute little guy/gal who took a break from the blizzard by resting on the beach in Strathmere! I wish that I had been there to see him/her in person. A guy from the marine stranding center checked out the seal and said that it was fine. My friends fed it some frozen fish and after a rest it was on it's way.

Some little vintage pretties for me - found in my own house -
Digging through some old advertising items, my Dad found these two old paper items in the shape of seashells with sea fairy babies on them. He knows that I love mermaid fairy things, so he gave them to me.
Sorting through the vintage jewelry that I'm going to be listing for sale on the website, I chose these two very pretty enamel floral pins to keep for myself. The green floral pin still has an old foil label from Strawbridge &  Clothier.

Birthday Blizzard

We're in the middle of a blizzard here in the woods, on today, my brithday. We had about 1 foot of snow overnight and should get another foot on top of that today.
Here are some photos taken around 8:30 this morning, because I know that you have never seen snow before. First on the left here is the view out of my office window, just over my computer screen. The trees are really weighed down with snow. Hoping none fall, Hoping the electric doesn't go out, because that would really suck.

Below is a shot of the railing on the deck and the rhododendruns, which are usually over 6 feet high - weighed down with snow.




Someone is enjoying the snow though. Harlow loves running through the snow. It's not too easy today though, because the snow is up past her belly. She runs through the snow, mouth down, catching and eating snow in her mouth as she runs.
