Hey, here's something that is actually vintage clothing related in this week's blog post! It's a very cool item that I bought in with a load of vintage last month, and I decided to keep it for myself because I liked it so much. It's a little moire silk bag with rayon cord strap and tassels. But I want you to look closely at the design in the moire below, what do you see? It's the sphinx and 2 pyramids! It's on the front and back and on the two inside panels when you open the sides. Click on the images for larger views.
To the left here is a closer view of the strap cord which runs down each side and ends with a tassel. The cord runs through metal rings at the top and bottom on both sides of the bags. The rings have tiny marcasites on them.
The bag is open in the middle, and each side unsnaps and lifts up to reveal inner compartments lined in ivory silk. Below you can see another sphinx on the black area and a heavy mirror attached to the top of the ivory lining. Inside is an old make-up powder puff and a little silk bag with snap closure and a small piece of nail file paper is on the front of the little bag, in case of broken nail emergencies!
Here is a closer view of the little silk bag with nailfile built in and the inside of the 1st side of the bag which has 2 pockets and a loop which I would guess is for a tube of lipstick.
There is also a silk moire change purse with initials done in marcasites too.
The change purse in lined in white leather in where the change goes, and it also has a side that snaps open and has layered pockets for cards. There is a maker's name stamped in gold along the bottom. It's French, and I can't really read it.
Here is the name stamped on the change purse. There are no other labels in the bag.
Finally, the other side of the bag snaps and lifts open the same as the 1st side, revealing another ivory silk lined compartment with an ivory silk change purse that is also lined in leather. There's the sphinx on that side too. Now isn't that such a cool bag! When I first saw it, I was like 'hey, is that a sphinx?' I've never seen a design done in moire like that, and I couldn't even begin to guess how they do it. Right now, I am guessing that the bag is from the Teens to 1920s.
Now onto the non-vintage related babble. Guess who I snapped a photo of this week? It was still light out when I saw this pretty deery out back. So I got my camera, ran up to the room over the garage and very quietly opened the window (thankfully there was no screen to blurr the photos) and managed to snap a few good shots of our dinner guest nibbling up our complimentary corn. Dinner for one this night, usually there are 2 deer and sometimes a raccoon friend joins them. I'm very excited because I didn't think I'd be able to get a photo of the deer. Now, I gotta snap that raccoon!
And here is Grumpy-Doodle, glaring at me out the front door because I'm going for a ride and not taking him!
A few days later I did take him for a ride to the shore. We went for a walk around the neighborhood there. He was sniffing under some bushes, and then he decided to run through the bushes to the other side, dragging me halfway through the bushes! I guess that was my punishment for not taking him for a ride a few days earlier.
